Gerrard confident Suarez can help Liverpool to trophies

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 04 February 2012

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes that the return of Luis Suarez will help the club repeat their 2001 treble trophy triumph, ESPN reports. The Reds won the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League in 2001 and Gerrard is hopeful the Reds can pick up both domestic trophies.

Suarez returns from his eight-game ban against Tottenham on Monday night and is expected to lead the club's charge to the Champions League qualfication. Gerrard has also returned from his injury problems and the two are expected to form a lethal partnership at Anfield. The Reds captain is happy that Suarez is back in contention and believes that his quality will shine over the top of his racist abuse.

Gerrard said: 'Luis can help us achieve what we set out to achieve - finishing top four and reaching two finals. I'm sure he will because he's a super player. Luis has shown over the last 12 months that he's one of the best players in the world so we want these players available. He has been missed and the players are looking forward to welcoming him back.'

The 31 year old is now favourite to become the new England captain after the removal of John Terry following his court case over a racially aggravated public order. Gerrard has not declared whether he wants the armband, but is concentrating on Liverpool for the moment and a crunch game against Tottenham on Monday.
