Could Mourinho be set to rekindle his special relationship with English Football
The football world was seemingly put on notice this week, amid emerging reports that Real Madrid Head Coach Jose Mourinho is to leave his post at the end of current campaign. With rumours of conflict among the hierarchy at Real, many have deemed the departure of the Portuguese to be somewhat imminent.
Alleged boardroom conflicts have been rumoured almost from the outset of Mourinho’s reign at the Bernabeu, with the former Chelsea manager, known to like total control of first-team affairs, an approach believed to have influenced his departure from Stamford Bridge. In a possible effort to appease their coach, Sporting Director Jorge Valdano departed his post in May 2011, perceived as Mourinho winning his apparent power struggle.
With Mourinho now seemingly free to apply his methods fully, his Madrid side sit top of La Liga, ahead of reigning Spanish and European Champions Barcelona. While Real’s great rivals recently dumped them out of the Copa del Rey, Mourinho’s men now stand a real chance of dethroning a team believed by many to be the greatest club side in world football. Such a feat would not only be yet another addition to the rich history of Real Madrid, but being the mastermind of such an achievement would see Mourinho’s stock rise higher than ever, as the only coach to have won the top domestic League in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. While his methods may not be well received by some critics, the possibility of such a decorated manager seeking pastures new will send shockwaves through many top clubs around the world, particularly in the Premier League.
Mourinho has long stated his desire to resume his Premier League career, returning to England, where he led Chelsea to unprecedented success. Linked in recent years with a variety of high-profile managerial posts, including Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and on several occasions, a sensational return to Stamford Bridge. With England’s top flight now more competitive than ever, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and even Newcastle United looking to break into the top four, the Premier League has a greater depth of Champions League-calibre clubs than in Mourinho’s previous spell in England.
With competition for honours in England now at its strongest for generations, the opportunity to appoint one of the greatest managers in the game may become hugely appealing to Premier League clubs. With Harry Redknapp tipped to vacate his post at Tottenham Hotspur to take the reigns as England Head Coach, Andre Villas-Boas under pressure following a troubled debut campaign at Chelsea and Sir Alex Ferguson continually questioned about his future in the game at aged 70, the Special One may well once again be coming to Premier League stadia in the near future.
