Villas-Boas puzzled by Webb penalty decision

By Bryan Waters

Monday 06 February 2012

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas was unhappy with referee Howard Webb's decision to award Manchester United a second penalty in their 3-3 draw with his side at Stamford Bridge, BBC Sport reports. Many believed the penalty was soft as United striker Danny Welbeck tangled with Branislav Ivanovic in the box.

Webb had missed a decision in the first half where Welbeck was clearly fouled by Gary Cahill, which would have resulted in a straight red card for the Chelsea debutant. The referee had a generally poor game in both manager's eyes and Villas-Boas was particularly disappointed with the second United penalty. Chelsea were 3-0 ahead against the Premier League champions, but two penalties from Wayne Rooney and a header from Javier Hernandez gave United the win.

Villas-Boas' side are now 14 points behind league leaders Manchester City and six points behind third placed Tottenham, who can extend the lead to nine with a win at Anfield tonight. The Blues boss did not play down the desire and spirit of the United players to get back into the game, but believed Webb's decisions changed the game.

The Chelsea manager said: 'The first one is an obvious penalty, nothing to say, but the second one is very, very dubious. I don't know if Howard Webb had the correct angle to make the decision but it is very unlucky for him to give it. It is Danny Welbeck's leg that collides against Branislav Ivanovic's. I don't know if Howard is compensating for anything from the first half but it is a wrong decision.'
