Redknapp verdict expected today

By Andy Brunning

Tuesday 07 February 2012

Harry Redknapp is set to discover whether or not he will be convicted in his trial for tax evasion, with a verdict expected either this afternoon or early tomorrow.

Closing statements from the prosecution and the defence were received yesterday and on Friday after two weeks of evidence. Redknapp, 64, is charged with cheating the public revenue along with former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric. The charges relate to payments made by Mandaric to a Monaco bank account owned by Redknapp.

The Judge is expected to summarise the case this morning, before sending the jury away to deliberate on their verdict early this afternoon. In a closing statement, Redknapp’s defence called the charges against the Tottenham manager “repugnant against all our basic instincts of fairness,” and attacked the use of a News of the World article as one of the main bodies of evidence in the case.

The verdict could have an impact on Redknapp’s continued tenure at Tottenham, as well as his chances of succeeding Fabio Capello as England manager after Euro 2012.
