Parks describes Friedel as 'phenomenal'

By Bryan Waters

Saturday 11 February 2012

Tottenham goalkeeping coach Tony Parks has described Brad Friedel as 'phenomenal' ahead of Newcastle's visit to White Hart Lane this evening, tottenhamhotspur.com reports.

The 40 year old American took his incredible run of consecutive appearances to 290 games in Monday's goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Friedel signed for Spurs in the summer on a free transfer and has turned into one of the club's most consistent performers. The game at Anfield was Friedel's ninth clean sheet so far this season and Parks has heaped praise on Friedel for performing consistently at such a grand old age.

Parks said: 'Brad plays with a freedom and a knowledge that he knows what his strengths are and he plays to those strengths, week in week out. Add that to the fact that he keeps himself unbelievably fit, for a 40-year-old man to play at the level he plays at is phenomenal. He's a top, top trainer. He hasn't missed a day's training.'

Friedel is keeping Spurs goalkeepers Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes out of the line-up with his performances, but reports have linked his opposite number today with a move to North London. Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is wanted by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp for when Friedel retires from football. Parks has praised Krul and Spurs could make a move in the summer, should Friedel retire.
