Porto chief defends Villas-Boas

By Stuart Campbell

Wednesday 15 February 2012

Porto president Pinto Da Costa claims that the work of Andre Vilas-Boas at Chelsea is being undermined by a group of the club’s players communicating with their former boss Jose Mourinho, the Telegraph is reporting.

Many members of Chelsea’s current squad - including Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba - played under Mourinho and developed a strong loyalty towards both his character and managerial style.

However Da Costa believes this is to the detriment of the efforts of Vilas-Boas to develop a successful team of his own at Stamford Bridge.

“He needs time to mould his own team and he can’t do that as long as there are players, as I’ve heard, who exchange text messages with Mourinho. And Abramovich knows this,” insisted Da Costa.

Whilst statements have resonated from within Chelsea that the position of Villas-Boas is not under threat, he faces some crucial games to justify this reported support, starting with a fifth - round F.A Cup tie at hom to Birmingham this Saturday lunch time.
