Petit calls for major redevelopment at Arsenal

By Bryan Waters

Friday 17 February 2012

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has told manager Arsene Wenger that he must release under-performing members of the squad to win trophies, Sky Sports reports.

The 41 year old spent three years with Arsenal and won the Premier League in a Gunners line-up that included Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, Tony Adams and David Seaman. Petit believes that Wenger has to make changes in order to deliver success and that means bringing in a better standard of footballer. Arsenal have not won a trophy since their 2005 FA Cup triumph over Manchester United and the Gunners take on Sunderland in the fifth round of the competition looking to win silverware this season.

Petit said: 'We shouldn't hesitate to talk about the end of the cycle. Regardless of age, we have to look seriously at certain players. Right now. Certain young players haven't done enough to justify the confidence that Arsene has in them. Walcott, somehow he's going to have to reach the next stage. It's been years that he's been at the same level. Ramsey, against Milan, I got the impression it was his twin brother on the pitch. In the way they behave, in their body language, we see they're not there anymore.'

The 1998 World Cup winner did not mince his words and also told his former manager that he has to sell Tomas Rosicky and Andrei Arshavin. Wenger is expected to hand a new deal to Rosicky at the end of the season, but Arshavin could move to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala or former club Zenit St. Petersburg. Petit also wants Wenger to get more experienced players, if the club have genuine aspirations of challenging for the Premier League title once again.
