Man United oppose Neville supporters' club

By Bryan Waters

Friday 17 February 2012

Gary Neville's attempt to build a supporters' club outside Old Trafford has been hit with a planning objection by Manchester United, The Manchester Evening News reports.

The former United captain is looking to build a ten-storey hotel and leisure complex on Sir Matt Busby Way and has applied to the council for planning permission. United have opposed the deal and sent a stinging five-page objection to call on council bosses to throw out the scheme. When the deal was first announced in May last year, United chief operating officer Michael Bolingbroke backed the deal and wished Neville success.

Neville made 400 appearances for the Premier League champions and won 19 trophies during his time at Old Trafford. Such a legacy has not stopped United dismissing the plans and the objection raises concerns over the facility being restricted to club members and not the general public. United are also worried about the impact on Old Trafford and the lack of parking at the place.

A United spokesman said: 'The club has been developing its vision for the area over the last few months, following on from the very successful pedestrianisation scheme executed in July. As part of that vision, we considered in detail the changes to the sheer scale of the new project proposed, as distinct to the original plan and we had some projections done of what the view of the stadium would be from various angles on the other side of Wharfside Way and have concluded that, on balance, we do not want a building of that size so close to the stadium.'
