Manchester United and Barcelona target Valencia defender

By David Redshaw

Friday 17 February 2012

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Manchester United are set to fight it out with Barcelona for the signature of Valencia centre-back Adil Rami this summer.

The 26-year-old is understood to have been watched by Old Trafford scouts during Los Ché’s 1-0 Europa League victory over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Thursday night, and with the rescission clause of €25m in his contract (which runs until June, 2015) reduced the longer he stays at the Mestalla, it arguably makes him affordable for both.

Despite the Bastia-born player having signed for Valencia just over a year ago and subsequently loaned back to Lille, his speed, anticipation and physicality as well as an ability to bring the ball out of defence has already made him a hit with supporters this season.

Although not quite an unknown, having appeared 16 times for France after making his debut in a friendly with Norway in August, 2010, Rami has shot to prominence with some sensational displays at the heart of Unai Emery’s defence alongside Victor Ruiz.

Ironically, he could face the Red Devils in the next round of the Europa League if both Valencia and United manage to progress after winning their first-leg games.
