Barcelona ponder India friendly

By David Redshaw

Saturday 18 February 2012

According to a report in Sport, Barcelona are studying the possibility of playing a summer first-team friendly in India, one of the countries the Catalan club has never visited in its long and illustrious history.

Despite Barca still awaiting boss Pep Guardiola’s decision over whether he will renew his contract for next season, plans are already underway to sort out a pre-season schedule, given the fact it will need to be organised with this summer’s European Championships and Spain’s participation in the London Olympics in mind.

However, the final decision over a fixture in the Asian country will be left to Guardiola and his coaching staff, although the Catalans are aware there is already massive interest in the European and World Club champions among the population.

One of the most important parts of any visit would be the presence of Lionel Messi, who only a few months ago caused a stir in Calcutta when he took part in a friendly between Argentina and Venezuela.
