Butt praises return of Cleverley to Man United midfield

By Bryan Waters

Sunday 19 February 2012

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt is looking forward to seeing the return of Tom Cleverley in midfield following his injury problem, manutd.com reports.

The 22 year old impressed for Sir Alex Ferguson's side before his ankle ligament problem suffered against Everton in October and returned against Ajax on Thursday night. Cleverley had pushed into the England setup at the start of the season and Ferguson praised the midfielder whilst he was injured. United fans had been crying out for a new midfielder, but with the form of Michael Carrick, Cleverley looks set to be the perfect partner in the United centre.

Butt played at Old Trafford with established midfielders such as Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Juan Sebastian Veron and believes that Cleverley's ability can cement him in the centre of the current United crop. The former England international said: 'I've known Cleverley since he was a kid. When I first started my coaching badges at United with Scholesy, Neville, Giggsy and Keaney, they were the team we were taking as 15-year-olds then. He was always a bright talent and, since he's been on loan, he's come back and been phenomenal really.'

'He needs to keep working hard at it. I'm sure he will as he comes across as a good lad and he needs to listen to the manager, coaches and experienced pros. He can go anywhere really, he's got that much ability. Cleverley is a much better technical footballer than I ever was. It just goes to show how it's moving on with these players', Butt continued.
