Keane backs Pearce for temporary England role

By Bryan Waters

Monday 20 February 2012

Roy Keane insists that his former Nottingham Forest teammate Stuart Pearce is a good option to take temporary charge of the England national team. Pearce has been put in charge for England’s friendly with Holland on February 29th after the resignation of Fabio Capello.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has been linked to take over permanently with the Three Lions and Keane believes that the next manager has to get the spirit back in the side. Pearce played with Keane for three years at Forest and the former Republic of Ireland captain believes that Pearce’s leadership and passion are perfect for England at this time.

Keane said: ‘I think so. Obviously Stuart has been involved with the senior team and is the manager of the under 21’s. I was fortunate to play with Pearce and he is a good man. I think he will be ideal with his leadership over the next few weeks up until the Holland game.’

The former Manchester United captain said: ‘Stuart Pearce was a great example to me and passion is a great word to use to describe him. People talk about it, but it just comes through his pores, particularly when you talk about the England set up.’
