Keane - Captaincy an important role

By Bryan Waters

Monday 20 February 2012

Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane has insisted that the role of a good captain is to not make an issue out of the appointment.

Keane was captain at Old Trafford for eight years and was renowned for being a strong, competitive leader with both United and Ireland. Recent issues surrounding the England captaincy have become more frequent following the Football Association’s decision to sack John Terry. The 40 year old believes that the best captains are those players who do not have inflated egos and are committed.

Stuart Pearce, Steve Bruce and Bryan Robson were all players who captained Keane during his career and the former Sunderland boss insists that a good captain has to manage the players in the club, as well as playing impressively every week.

The former Irish international said: ‘They were not on an ego trip. They would take it on board of course when you are at the bigger clubs. You have got to win trophies and you have to be an example when you train, the way you play, your commitment to the team and there are off the field activities. You just have to have the respect of your team mates and you earn that on the training ground.’
