Ipswich semi-final was a proud moment says Keane

By Bryan Waters

Monday 20 February 2012

Former Ipswich manager Roy Keane believes that leading Ipswich to their first semi-final in over three decades was a great achievement.

The former Republic of Ireland international was ultimately sacked by club’s board after poor performances in the Championship, but looks back on that cup run with fond memories. Keane revealed that he had a policy for young players in the second season and was happy to award eight players from the academy with debuts.

Keane said: ‘I was very proud in a sense that we played a lot of young players. The fact that we got to the semi-final was a great achievement, especially for the young players. I think there were about eight players from the academy that made their debuts so I was very pleased with that.

‘Ultimately, you want to do well in the league and we had a difficult run with injuries and we are in the business that if you are not achieving what you set out to do, you are going to pay the price. You have got to learn from it and learn quickly’, Keane said.
