Getafe in emergency appeal to the Spanish League

By David Redshaw

Tuesday 21 February 2012

AS reports that Getafe have decided to appeal to the Spanish League (RFEF) for special dispensation to make an emergency signing to cover the loss of central defender Alberto Lopo, who fractured his arm in the 1-1draw with Espanyol on Saturday.

Los Azulones are seeking to sign another centre-back as boss Luis García does not know if he will have four defenders available for this weekend’s visit to Real Betis or will have to move other players into unfamiliar roles. Rafa López, Tsepo Masilela, Miguel Torres and Juan Valera are all either injured or unfit and García may have to drop midfielder Juan Rodríguez into the centre of his rearguard.

The Getafe boss remains hopeful Valera might recover in time for the trip to Andalucía after he missed out against Espanyol, while Torres was involved against the Catalans despite not being fully fit following three weeks out with a muscle problem, but may struggle to play two games in seven days.

Although Lopo’s injury is long term and he is certain to be on the sidelines for what remains of this season, the rules do not favour Getafe’s bid to replace him. However, if the RFEF does lend a sympathetic ear to the Madrid club’s cause then García could be looking at the options available to him over the next few days.
