Thursday 01 March 2012

The Manchester Evening News reports that Manchester City will play Arsenal in a pre-season friendly to be held in China’s Bird’s Nest Stadium, the arena constructed for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The fixture is due to take place on July 27, the date the London Olympics gets underway, and will form part of City’s pre-season tour to Asia. Officially known as the Beijing Olympic Stadium, the Bird’s Nest cost $423m to build and seats up to 80,000 spectators, reduced from 91,000 during the Olympics.

In their most recent Premier League meeting in December Manchester City defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the Etihad Arena through David Silva’s 52nd minute goal. City also knocked Arsenal out of this season’s League Cup by the same score at the Emirates Stadium a month earlier. The two sides meet again in the Premier League on 8 April. League leaders City currently hold a 17-point lead over Arsenal, who reside in fourth place.
