Thursday 08 March 2012

Sky Sports have revealed that Manchester United will be without the services of Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia for their Europa League meeting with Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

Scholes was reportedly rested from training on Wednesday, signalling that he will not be involved in the match, while Valencia is still recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in the competition’s prior round against Ajax.

There was however positive injury news for Sir Alex Ferguson as midfielders Anderson and Tom Cleverly from a knee and ankle injuries respectively.

Scholes has featured 11 times for Manchester United since coming out of retirement in early January. The 37-year-old originally gave up playing in summer 2011 and had done some work with United’s youth and reserve teams but was surprisingly included in the squad to play Manchester City in the FA Cup on January 8, a game United won 3-2 and in which Scholes played the last half an hour.
