Wenger facing Champions League touchline ban

By Andrew Tuft

Thursday 29 March 2012

Arsene Wenger is expected to be given a Champions League touchline ban on Thursday after an outburst during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Milan in February, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The Gunners eventually lost the tie 4-3 on aggregate. Wenger is alleged to have confronted referee Damir Skomina and described the official’s performance as “a disgrace”. The manager is also alleged to have sworn at the Slovenian in front of a UEFA delegate.

Wenger, the Telegraph adds, is said to have defended his behaviour as little different to a routine exchange between managers and officials after a match and denied his acted “excessively”. In the match, Arsenal were shown three yellow cards to Milan’s four, but committed 21 fouls to the Serie A side’s eight.

Goals from Laurent Koscielny, Tomas Rosicky and Robin van Persie gave Wenger’s team hope of overturning the first-leg 4-0 deficit but the comeback proved too much for Arsenal, who bowed out of the Champions League in the second round.
