Liverpool chase Atlético Madrid ace

Friday 30 March 2012

Liverpool are hot on the heels of Atlético Madrid attacking midfielder Diego, claims El Mundo Deportivo.

The 27-year-old, real name Diego Ribas da Cunha, is on loan at the Vicente Calderón from Wolfsburg and is set to return to the German club at the end of this season but, although he has not said so openly, his desire is believed to be to remain in La Liga. Atleti are understood to be keen to keep him in the Spanish capital but could be put off by his parent club’s €10m asking price and his wages of €5m-a-year.

Another stumbling block is that the Brazilian international is now being targeted by some of Europe’s top clubs after impressing this season and, according to the same publication, reports in his native country suggest Liverpool are leading the way. The Reds enquired about him last summer when he fell out with Wolfsburg Coach Felix Magath and at the time the player said he would be open to a move to Anfield.

“I know that Liverpool are interested in signing me, he told Intergoles.com. “It is without doubt the most interesting proposal I have had. Every player wants to play at Anfield in the shirt of so historic a club.”

However, the possibility of Diego returning to the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg (who own the player’s rights) cannot be ruled out. Magath has recently intimated he could be prepared to give him a second chance at the Volkswagen Arena if both men can make their peace, particularly after the campaign Diego has had in Spain.
