Tottenham vs Swansea - Match preview and team news

Sunday 01 April 2012

The battle of two prospective England managers takes place at White Hart Lane this afternoon as hot favourite Harry Redknapp hosts outside prospect Brendan Rodgers. Redknapp’s Tottenham have not won a league game in five, whereas Rodgers’ Swansea have won three of their last four outings.

Spurs’ form has suffered since Redknapp was made firm favourite to replace Fabio Capello in the hot seat at Wembley. Tottenham got back to winning ways in the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Bolton, but in their last home fixture, Stoke proved a difficult task and managed to pick up a 1-1 draw. The gap between Tottenham and their North London rivals Arsenal will be level if Spurs beat Swansea today, but Redknapp will be unhappy at how his side allowed a 12 point lead to vanish so quickly.

Aaron Lennon could be a welcome return to the starting line-up after his recovery from a hamstring injury, which will give Tottenham more width on the right-hand side and allow Luka Modric and Scott Parker to partner up again in central midfield. Younes Kaboul is set to deputise ahead of Ledley King, who played 90 minutes in the midweek win over Bolton. Brad Friedel is also expected to return after being rested in midweek.

Swansea arrive at White Hart Lane in good away form having won four out of their last six away games. Last weekend’s home loss to Everton was only their third home defeat of the season and a win at White Hart Lane would move Rodgers’ side level on points with seventh placed Liverpool, should the Reds lose away at Newcastle today. Swansea have continued to defy their critics in their first top-flight season since 1983 and Rodgers has them playing great football, which they showcased in a 1-1 draw with Spurs at the Liberty Stadium earlier this season.

Rodgers welcomes back Nathan Dyer after a three-match ban and the tricky winger is expected to displace another tricky winger in Wayne Routledge on the right wing. Steven Caulker is on-loan from Tottenham, so is ineligible to play today, and Garry Monk is expected to take his place at the heart of the defence. Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has scored five goals in his last four away games and could cause a threat to the Tottenham defence today.

With Spurs being in poor league form, Swansea will be confident that they can take advantage and finish the season unbeaten against the North London side. Lennon’s return for the White Hart Lane side will be a massive advantage, but in left-back Neil Taylor, the England international faces a stern test against a player who is quick enough to stifle his threat. Angel Rangel faces a difficulty stopping Gareth Bale and Spurs should have enough to stop the rot and win in what will be a tough fixture.
