Chelsea may be forced to call on injured Terry

Saturday 07 April 2012

Chelsea may select injured captain John Terry even before his two broken ribs have fully healed, interim manager Roberto Di Matteo has admitted, because the stand-in boss feels the team cannot go without his leadership qualities, the Guardian has reported.

Terry broke two of his ribs in Chelsea’s 1-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Benfica in late March, yet played 90 minutes against Aston Villa days later and an hour of the second-leg against the Portuguese side on Wednesday. But Terry had to be withdrawn after suffering a further blow to the already-tender region that left him struggling to breathe.

The Guardian says that while Di Matteo “understands Terry needs time to heal”, the former Chelsea midfielder “cannot help but feel a craving to call upon the influential figure”. Terry will not be involved on Saturday when Chelsea host Wigan Athletic, but with an FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur next week and a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona shortly after that, the 31-year-old England international may be asked to play through the pain barrier again this season.
