Former Arsenal defender Campbell believes Wenger needs to refresh his backroom staff
Sol Campbell has told the Guardian that Arsene Wenger needs to find a new set of coaches in order to return Arsenal to the success of the past, adding that a former player who won trophies under Wenger at the Gunners would be the ideal candidate.
Campbell however has ruled himself out of the running for such a position, instead suggest either Denis Bergkamp, who is currently working for first club Ajax in his native Holland, or Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal captain who is now an executive at Arsenal’s weekend opponents Manchester City. Campbell also suggests that either Bergkamp or Vieira could work under Wenger now and then replace the manager at a later date.
A veteran of more than 200 games across two spells for Arsenal, Campbell admitted that he thought it was unlikely Wenger would make such an appointment, claiming Wenger would feel insecure if surrounded by a figure who could question his methods. Campbell said: “Arsene is a single-minded leader who does not like to have anyone around who could threaten his authority, either by challenging his decisions or by being the person that will eventually take his job.
