Di Matteo still eyes Champions League despite Fulham draw

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is still confident of reaching the all important 4th Champions League spot this season, despite only picking up a point in the local derby against Fulham last night.

Chelsea had gone ahead through a controversial Frank Lampard penalty, one which opposition manager Martin Jol branded as 'soft'. In the second half, Fulham increased the pressure and secured a draw when Clint Dempsey headed past Petr Cech. The 1-1 draw leaves the Blues in 6th position, two points behind Newcastle and Tottenham in 5th and 4th positions.

"You look at it and we're closer to that fourth spot than we were. We were always playing catch-up, so the situation was difficult from the start. We have to look at it positively. We are closer now than we were a month ago. We've got a good squad, a squad full of good players. We will utilise them," Di Matteo told Sport.co.uk.

With five games remaining, Chelsea will be looking to continue their six game unbeaten run, but face big clashes away to Arsenal, home to Newcastle, and away to Liverpool within those remaining fixtures. Before that, the Blues make the short trip to Wembley next weekend to face Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final, looking to win the trophy for the 7th time in the club's history.
