My best-ever season says Raul Garcia

Wednesday 11 April 2012

Osasuna midfielder Raul Garcia, scorer of both Los Rojillos’ goals in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Espanyol, reckons he is having the best season of his career.

The 23-year-old, capped 20 times by Spain at Under-21 level, is on a one-year loan at the Reyno de Navarra from Atletico Madrid after returning to his first professional club before the beginning of this season. Garcia’s brace in the Espanyol game takes his tally for this term to nine, his best-ever return, although he says he does not look at statistics.

“I came here with one objective: to achieve top-flight safety, something that we have done with a few games of the season remaining, so I suppose that is some satisfaction,” he told a Press conference after training at Tajonar on Wednesday. “I’m not obsessed with numbers as long as it’s for the good of the team. Everything helps, so you could say this is the best season of my career so far.”

Pamplona-born Garcia is Osasuna’s leading scorer this season, apart from being credited with eight assists, and has already overtaken last year’s top marksman Kike Sola, who finished on seven. In theory, a return to Atleti is likely at the end of the current campaign but the player maintains that right now he is not thinking of the future.

“I don’t want to speculate on what I will be doing next year while this season has yet to end,” he says. “There are still six games to go and a lot to play for, so it’s better to talk about things when it’s over. It’s not something I’ve thought about.”

Asked about Wednesday’s game between Atletico and cross-city rivals Real Madrid, Garcia believes his parent club has a chance of winning.

“It is a great game and I have been lucky enough to have played in it. It is a special atmosphere and despite recent results Atleti are doing well, so you can be sure they have a chance of victory. But Madrid are also playing well and they are very strong.

“Naturally I want Atletico to win. There are a lot of people there I like very much and I always want the best for my friends,” he added.
