Tottenham winger Bale to be subject of Barcelona offer

By Andrew Tuft

Friday 20 April 2012

Barcelona are expected to make a summer transfer offer for Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale, the Daily Telegraph has reported, with the newspaper adding that the La Liga club sees Bale’s long-term future not in midfield, but as a left-back replacement for Eric Abidal.

Abidal has undergone a liver transplant and Barcelona are said to be preparing for when the France international can no longer perform at the highest level, identifying Bale as the ideal player to come in at left-back. The Welshman started his career in defence but has risen to prominence playing on the left of Spurs’ midfield, and has recently been given a roaming brief to exploit his ability and has also played on the right on a number of occasions.

The Telegraph add that Barcelona’s summer transfer plans are intertwined with the future of Head Coach Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires this summer. Guardiola only ever signs one-year deals at the Nou Camp and if an extension is agreed, the newspaper believes Bale will top the La Liga side’s summer wish list.
