Wenger rejects Chelsea exhaustion ahead of Arsenal fixture
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger does not believe Chelsea will be too tired to perform against the Gunners in the Premier League on Saturday, the London Evening Standard has reported, with the Frenchman insisting Roberto Di Matteo has a squad large enough to handle fatigue.
Chelsea hosted Barcelona at Stamford Bridge 24 hours after Arsenal played Wigan Athletic at the Emirates Stadium earlier this week, with Di Matteo’s side winning their fixture 1-0 while Wenger watched on as his team fell to a 2-1 reverse. But whereas Arsenal dominated much of their match in defeat, Chelsea were on the back foot for large portions of their victory, with Barcelona exerting intense pressure on the Blues’ defence to no avail.
Wenger however expects Chelsea to be a difficult proposition when the sides meet in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. He said: I don’t believe [Chelsea] will be tired at all. You expect to be playing Chelsea at their best and you cannot expect them, with the players and numbers they have, to be tired.”
When the sides met at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season Arsenal romped to a 5-3 victory courtesy of a Robin van Persie hat-trick, but much has changed at Chelsea since the October meeting, with Di Matteo now in charge in place of Andre Villas-Boas.
