Chelsea prepare moves for Benfica duo Garcia and Oliveira

Tuesday 24 April 2012

Away from the hubbub of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final second-leg with Barcelona on Tuesday, the Blues are reported by the Daily Mail to be lining up transfers for Benfica pair Javi Garcia and Nelson Oliveira.

Midfielder Garcia played against Chelsea in both of the Champions League quarter-finals between the sides, while striker Oliveira was an unused substitute as Roberto Di Matteo oversaw a 3-1 aggregate victory, winning 1-0 in Portugal and 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, with Garcia getting Benfica’s goal in the away leg.

Garcia, 25, is a product of Real Madrid’s youth system and made more than 20 appearances for the Spanish giants in his time at the club. Garcia has also played for Osasuna before joining Benfica in 2009. The Mail says a figure of £17m is as much as Chelsea are prepared to offer for the player, who can also slot in to central defence, while Benfica are holding out for closer to £25m.

Oliveira is a 20-year-old striker who has made only a handful of appearances for Benfica but has reportedly caught the eye of the Chelsea scouts. Oliveira also made his senior Portugal debut earlier this season.
