Di Matteo insists Chelsea deserve Champions League final place

Wednesday 25 April 2012

Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo has insisted his side deserve to be in the Champions League final after defeating holders Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate following two legs of a resolute rear guard action, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The Premier League club held Barca to a 2-2 draw on the night on Tuesday evening despite losing both centre-backs in the first-half, with Gary Cahill withdrawn injured and captain John Terry shown a straight red card. Barcelona briefly held the advantage but Ramires’ goal before half-time titled the balance back in favour of Chelsea on away goals, with Fernando Torres wrapping up the victory with a late effort after rounding Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Despite Barcelona dominating possession and recording substantially more shots on goal over the two-legged contest, Di Matteo was adamant Chelsea had earned their second Champions League final appearance, the first coming in 2009 in Moscow, when Chelsea lost on penalties to Manchester United. Di Matteo said: “I think we deserve to be in the final. It's a historical night for the club. We play a different style to Barcelona and their style is unique and is different from ours. I don't think they deserved to go through. I think we did.
