Wenger unhappy with Stoke fan abuse

Sunday 29 April 2012

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has spoken about his disgust at some taunts from Stoke supporters during the 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium, BBC Sport reports.

The Frenchman saw his side peg back the Potters thanks to Robin van Persie, who scored his 35th goal of the season, but Wenger was disappointed more with matters off-the-field than just a point at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke and Arsenal have enjoyed a fierce rivalry since comments from Wenger over Ryan Shawcross’ tackle in 2010 which broke midfielder Aaron Ramsey’s leg.

Wenger was annoyed with the jeers directed towards Ramsey and has called for the authorities in football to tackle abuse from the terraces, something Stoke boss Tony Pulis agreed with partly. Some Arsenal fans directed abuse towards Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross, but Wenger concentrated on the Stoke fans and was aggrieved at why Ramsey was being booed.

The Arsenal boss said: “I don’t think you can be especially proud to boo Aaron Ramsey. I don’t see what he has done wrong. It’s an old story where the fans of Stoke stand behind their player, but it shouldn’t go as far as booing Ramsey.”

“I think one day football will have to tackle that. It’s easy to sit in the stand and insult people. It’s the easiest sport in the world. If you want to stop that, it’s easy to stop. You can isolate every single face”, the Arsenal boss continued.
