War of words between Mancini and Ferguson after Manchester derby spat
A war of words has broken out between the managers of Manchester City and Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson accused Roberto Mancini of having too much contact with the officials during City’s 1-0 win over United on Monday evening, the BBC has reported.
The two bosses had to be separated on the touchline after a Nigel de Jong challenge on Danny Welbeck left Ferguson up in arms, with fourth official Mike Jones and City first team coach David Platt having to step in and separate the pair after Mancini returned Ferguson’s verbal volley with one of his own.
Ferguson later claimed Mancini was “haranguing” the officials throughout the match. In reply, a heavily-sarcastic Mancini said: “And him? He doesn't talk with the referees or fourth officials - never. I spoke with the fourth official and then Ferguson told me some kind words.”
The outcome of the match leaves City top of the Premier League table on goal difference with two games to play. City lead United by a difference of eight goals, five of which came in City’s 6-1 win over United at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
