Tottenham open talks with Arsenal target Vertonghen

Wednesday 02 May 2012

Arsenal face a fight to sign Ajax captain and Belgium international Jan Vertonghen after the Daily Mail has reported that the Gunners North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have already opened talks over a move to White Hart Lane with the Dutch club.

It was thought that Arsenal were in pole position to bring Vertonghen to the Premier League but Spurs may have stolen a march on their near-neighbours. With Vertonghen entering the final year of his contract this summer the defender’s price tag is likely to be lower than it would ordinarily be, sparking a struggle between Arsenal and Spurs and perhaps other Premier League clubs, as Newcastle United have also been linked with the 25-year-old, as have Chelsea.

Vertonghen is an international teammate of Thomas Vermaelen, as well as formerly being a club-mate of the current Arsenal defender who played for Ajax until 2009. Vertonghen made his Ajax debut in 2006, by which point Vermaelen was already established in the side.
