UEFA uphold yellow card rule leaving Chelsea players to miss Champions League final

There will be no change in UEFA’s disciplinary rules to prevent players missing the Champions League final through the totting up process for at least three years, the BBC has reported, leaving three of the four Chelsea players who are suspended for the match with Bayern Munich disappointed.

Branislav Ivanovic, Raul Meireles and Ramires will all miss the final, to be played at Bayern Munich’s own Allianz Arena on May 19, while Bayern will be without Luiz Gustavo, David Alaba and Holger Badstuber. There had been a suggestion that the bookings would be quashed to allow the players to feature in the match, or if not, to prevent a similar situation next season, but UEFA have rejected this out of hand.

That is despite Euro 2012 having such a yellow card amnesty at the quarter-finals stage, but a UEFA statement read: “Different rules can apply in different competitions. The rules are a result of careful, democratic procedures,” while a UEFA executive added: “We have just had three sessions with representatives of the European Clubs' Association and others, in which we confirmed the rule for the coming three years.

John Terry, who received a straight red card in the semi-final second-leg with Barcelona, would not have been spared as the proposal made plain that such punishments should not be lifted.
