Arsenal to play Nigeria friendly

Arsenal will travel to Nigeria as part of their pre-season preparations to play a friendly against what has been described as a leading African team, the BBC has reported.

The identity of the Gunners’ opponents is not yet known but the match will take place in Abuja on August 5, around a week before the start of the new Premier League season. The fixture will form part of a globe-trotting pre-season for Arsene Wenger’s side, as they will also play matches in China and Malaysia in July.

Ordinarily Arsenal would host the Emirates Cup, a pre-season tournament staged at their own Emirates Stadium, but the club chose to postpone the event as the London Olympics will be taking place at the same time.

Arsenal last visited Africa in 1993 when they toured South Africa and are said to be the best supported team in Nigeria. Nwankwo Kanu, a former Nigeria international with nearly 100 caps to his name, played for the Gunners between 1999 and 2004.
