San Mames screens Athletic final
A 40,000-capacity crowd will pack the San Mames on Wednesday to watch Athletic Bilbao’s Europe League final with Atletico Madrid on six giant screens.
Around 15,000 fans will travel to watch the all-Spanish affair at the National Arena in Bucharest, but those unfortunate enough not to have secured a ticket to the game have snapped up those on offer at the San Mames, with hundreds of thousands also expected to view the clash at home and in bars throughout the Basque country.
AS says the main focus, however, will be at Athletic’s home ground where, with the collaboration of the Provincial Council of Vizcaya and the Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa (BBK) savings bank, the screens will be erected and supporters admitted two hours before kick-off.
Besides the game, there will be messages from Bilbao players and highlights of the team’s passage to the final of the competition projected, while the initiative will also include performances from pop bands The Uskis and Doctor Deseo and is likely to be repeated for the upcoming Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
The money from the sale of tickets - €3 for club members and €5 for the rest of the paying public - will go entirely to La Casa de Misercordia, a charity set up to help elderly people in need of financial assistance.
