Spanish police arrested 52 people after a night of disturbances involving Atletico Madrid supporters celebrating their team’s Europa League victory.

Atleti fans turned out in their thousands in the centre of the Spanish capital after Los Colchoneros had beaten Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the final played in Bucharest. However, La Vanguardia reports that things turned nasty during the early hours when several vehicles were set on fire, with shops looted after having their windows smashed and barricades set up: there was even damage to the front door of the famous Prado Museum.

In addition, 37 people had to be treated for injuries (including 12 police officers who were taken to hospital) as the Plaza de Neptuno, where Atletico followers usually celebrate their sporting triumphs, was turned into a riot zone.

Similarly, there were a number of other incidents in the vicinity of the clubs’ Vicente Calderon stadium where youths forced the doors of several establishments and stole fire extinguishers, uprooted road signs and disabled traffic lights.
