Van Persie to be told he is staying at Arsenal even without a new contract

Wednesday 16 May 2012

Arsene Wenger will refuse to sell Robin van Persie this summer even if the Netherlands international declines to extend his contract to stay at Arsenal, the Daily Mail has reported.

Talks are due to take place this week between the club and the player. A string of European clubs are said to be waiting on the outcome of the negotiations, with the Mail listing Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus among those interested in swooping for van Persie this summer for a relatively low fee. But Wenger would reportedly rather lose van Persie for nothing in a year’s time than sell him now.

The Mail adds that a three-year, £130,000 per week contract extension is on the table for the 28-year-old, with a £5m signing on fee to sweeten the deal. The newspaper stresses that even if van Persie tells Wenger and Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis that he wants to leave the club, the club will not countenance a transfer.
