Chelsea players desperate for Di Matteo to become permanent manager

Monday 21 May 2012

Interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is the players’ choice to become the club’s new permanent manager after guiding the Stamford Bridge side to victory in the Champions League, the Guardian has reported.

Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas in March and has also won the FA Cup in his brief spell in charge, having previously been assistant manager under Villas-Boas. An announcement about the Italian’s future has not yet been made but the Guardian reports that Chelsea’s players sang Di Matteo’s name and “we want him to stay” in the dressing room in the Allianz Arena while Roman Abramovich was addressing the squad.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has also acknowledged that Chelsea’s senior players have expressed a desire for Di Matteo to be given the post permanently, but Buck added that the club stopped searching for a full-time manager before the first leg of the Champions League semi-final with Barcelona in April and will only begin the process again this week.
