Martinez in talks over Liverpool position
Roberto Martinez has met with Liverpool owner John W. Henry as the club search for a manager to replace Kenny Dalglish, although the Liverpool Echo report that the Reds insist they are no closer to appointing a replacement despite the conversation between Martinez and Henry.
Martinez was the first name on the Liverpool shortlist to be approached after Dalglish’s contract was terminated following a disappointing Premier League campaign. Liverpool ended the season in eighth place and despite a Carling Cup victory and progression to the FA Cup final, the iconic Scot paid the price for Liverpool’s league failings.
Liverpool have also reportedly approached Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers, Ajax Coach Frank de Boer and Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp, only for the trio to decline to be interviewed, the Daily Mirror confirms, while Martinez was given permission to speak with the club by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan. The Spaniard interrupted a holiday in Barbados to meet Henry in Miami but Liverpool say they are not yet ready to name a new manager.
