Monday 28 May 2012

Former England defender Sol Campbell has warned supporters travelling to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012 to be wary of racially-motivated violence, the Daily Mail has reported. The former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur centre-back also believes UEFA were wrong to award the tournament to the two countries because of their problems with violence and racism.

Campbell was speaking in a BBC documentary and is quoted by the Mail as saying: “Stay at home, watch it on TV. Don’t even risk it…because you could end up coming back in a coffin.

The former England international added that UEFA should not allow the two host nations to organise such prestigious events until they have tackled the issues that dog the countries. Campbell said: “I think they were wrong because what they should say is that if you want this tournament you sort your problems out.

Reports have already emerged that the families of a number of England’s black players, including Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, will not attend the tournament for the reasons that Campbell describes.

Campbell won 73 caps for England and played at a number of international tournaments, including the 1998 World Cup in France and Euro 2004, held in Portugal.
