Tuesday 05 June 2012

Chelsea midfielder Oriel Romeu believes his club colleague and compatriot Fernando Torres will score the goals that see Spain retain their European Championship crown at Euro 2012, the Daily Mail has reported.

Romeu said: "I think that Torres will be a very important player for the national team at the Euros because he is a player with great quality and experience and these characteristics are very important in a forward.” Romeu, 20, joined Chelsea a year ago from Barcelona and made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last season.

Torres returned to the Spain squad in time for Euro 2012 having been left out of the party for a February friendly against Venezuela. The Mail adds that Torres is likely to start Spain’s first match of the competition, against Italy on Saturday.

Since moving to Chelsea in January 2011 in a £50m transfer from Liverpool Torres has struggled to find his feet, scoring on 12 goals, 11 of which came last season in a campaign that included a dry spell between mid-October and mid-March but still ended with two trophies, the FA Cup and the Champions League.
