Chelsea put their trust in Di Matteo
Roberto Di Matteo intends to build on his successful caretaker spell at Chelsea after being confirmed as the club’s new full-time manager, Yahoo Sports has reported.
The former Blues midfielder was appointed as interim boss in March following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas, having previously been the Portuguese’s assistant. In a matter of a few months Di Matteo delivered both the FA Cup and the Champions League, the latter trophy doubly important as it guaranteed participation in the competition next season after Chelsea could only finish sixth in the Premier League.
Yahoo note that while Di Matteo was always amongst the favourites to be the next permanent manager at Stamford Bridge, the club’s owner, Roman Abramovich was also looking elsewhere. Abramovich was hopeful of tempting Pep Guardiola, who stood down as Barcelona Coach, into cancelling his planned sabbatical and taking the reins at Chelsea. But when that did not happen, the club turned to Di Matteo, handing the Italian a two-year contract.
