Chelsea eyeing move for Debuchy

Saturday 16 June 2012

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to continue his redevelopment of the Blues squad with the signing of Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy, The Daily Mail reports.

The 26 year old has impressed at Euro 2012 with France after regular right-back Bacary Sagna was ruled out with injury. Chelsea are highly interested in Debuchy, but it was highly expected that Newcastle were signing the Frenchman at the end of the tournament. Reports emerged that Debuchy was interested in making a move to the Sports Direct Arena and linking up with international teammate Yohan Cabaye, who he also played with at Lille.

Interest from the current Champions League holders may have swayed Debuchy to move to a new look Chelsea side, which has also seen Debuchy’s former teammate Eden Hazard move. The Blues released Jose Bosingwa at the end of the season and Debuchy is earmarked as the solution to the right back problems the club are facing.

Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel is also an option if Debuchy does move to the North East and the Holland international is interested in Stamford Bridge, saying that Chelsea are a ‘great club’. However, the Dutch international has failed to impress as much as Debuchy at Euro 2012 and new Chelsea permanent boss Roberto di Matteo has increased his interest in the Frenchman.
