Liverpool on alert as Sturridge considers Chelsea future

Sunday 17 June 2012

A host of Premier League clubs have been put on red alert after reports have emerged that Daniel Sturridge wants to leave Chelsea after the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo, blaming the lack of opportunities on his England squad omission for Euro 2012 according to The Mirror.

Liverpool seem to be one of the main clubs pursuing the 22-year-old with their interest being heavily reported in recent weeks, this revelation seeming to add fuel to the fire. New boss Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that his connections with Chelsea – spending a number of years in their coaching network – will help in a bid to bring the attacker to Anfield.

It is well noted that Sturridge grew frustrated with the lack of time he spent at centre-forward last season, instead being preferred by management to be out wide. However under Di Matteo the player found his number of minutes on the pitch decrease as the likes of Ramires and Kalou were given a more attacking role and more playing time respectively.

Liverpool’s interest is no surprise given the contribution Sturridge has going forward last season grabbing 11 league goals in 28 games. It is unlikely, though, that Chelsea will allow the England international to leave without a considerable transfer fee being involved. Other clubs that are looking at the striker are Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal, who could be offered the player in a swap deal for Theo Walcott.
