Lille reject Newcastle bid for Debuchy

Tuesday 19 June 2012

Newcastle have had a £4million bid for Mathieu Debuchy turned away by Lille, with head coach Rudi Garcia joking they must have the wrong player in mind.

ESPN reports that the Ligue 1 side have a much higher valuation than that for the French international. Garcia addressed the bid, saying:

“I do believe that Newcastle have faxed an offer of £4m - but they must have the wrong player” before conceding that the France international might leave this summer: “He [Debuchy] is torn between staying with us and playing in the Champions League in our new stadium or going elsewhere … If he does go and it is a sporting progression, then we will be happy to see him evolve.”

Debuchy has been in fine form for his country, playing in both of their game so far at Euro 2012, continuing his season for Lille on the international stage. Similar to many full backs the 26-year-old shows a strong attacking style as well as defensive head – illustrated by his 5 goals last season in 38 games.

There is a lot of interest in the Lille player, with reports in recent days that Chelsea and Manchester United are also looking into signing the defender. But Garcia has made one thing clear, he will not give up Debuchy for a small fee.
