Agent of Arsenal’s Vermaelen downplays Barcelona link

Friday 22 June 2012

The agent of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has denied there was anything untoward in his client’s encounter with Barcelona defender Carles Puyol, ESPN has reported.

Vermaelen has in recent days been linked with a move to Barca and a picture appeared in the Spanish Press of Vermaelen and Puyol at a restaurant. ESPN adds that while Vermaelen’s agent, Kees Vos, played down the meaning of the meeting, he did little to dismiss talk of a move to Barcelona. Vos said only: “It is two world-class defenders in the same restaurant.

But for a knee injury Puyol would be on international duty with Spain at Euro 2012, while Vermaelen’s Belgium could not escape a qualification group containing Germany, who topped the group and face Greece on Thursday in a quarter-final, and Turkey, who finished second, only to lose a play-off to Croatia. Puyol’s Spain face France in their quarter-final having topped the group in which Croatia featured, along with Italy and the Republic of Ireland.
