Chelsea turn to Huntelaar after Hulk move breaks down

Monday 25 June 2012

Champions League winners Chelsea will turn to Netherlands international Klass-Jan Huntelaar after backing away from Porto’s Brazilian striker Hulk, ClubCall has reported.

Hulk had been a long-term target of Chelsea but Porto were thought to be trying to engineer a bidding war between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League side wanted no part of such an attempt and turned their focus elsewhere with Huntelaar now a consideration, while Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao, formerly of Porto, is also an option.

Huntelaar has a £17m release clause in his contract and netted 29 goals in 32 league games for his current club, Schalke, last season, having moved to the Bundesliga from Milan in 2010.

The 28-year-old has also been prolific at international level, scoring 31 goals in 56 games although he could not find the net during Holland’s brief participation in Euro 2012. Huntelaar began the tournament as the Dutch side’s second choice striker, behind Arsenal’s Robin van Persie but the Netherlands failed to win any of their three group game.
