Chelsea’s Courtois renews Atletico loan

Thursday 28 June 2012

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaud Courtois will spend a second season on loan at La Liga side Atletico Madrid, the Daily Mail has reported.

Courtois joined Chelsea from Racing Genk last summer but was immediately loaned to Atleti, spending the year in Spain and helping his temporary side to victory in the Europa League. The 20-year-old played 37 league games for Atletico last season, establishing himself as the club’s No 1 and aiding a fifth-place league finish.

Courtois also made his international bow last season, having been called into the Belgium squad in October 2011 and eventually making his first senior appearance for his country against France in November of the same year. The game ended in a 0-0 draw and Courtois has since made further appearances for Belgium.

The goalkeeper was signed by Chelsea after less than 50 games for Genk, having made one appearance in the 2008-09 season and then more than 40 in the 2010-11 campaign, a year in which Genk won the Belgian league.
