Villas-Boas to make Moutinho and Sturridge first Tottenham signings

Friday 29 June 2012

Andre Villas-Boas is expected to be named as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager next week and will make signing Porto and Portugal midfielder Joao Moutinho and Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge his first priorities, the Evening Standard has reported.

Moutinho could be brought to White Hart Lane as a replacement for Luka Modric, who is wanted by Chelsea and Real Madrid and could be sold this summer for £40m or more, the newspaper adds. Villas-Boas was the Coach at Porto when Moutinho was signed from Sporting Lisbon in 2010 and had asked for the midfielder to be bought by Chelsea, but Porto refused to sell. But he could become a Spurs player if the club meet his £35m buyout clause.

Villas-Boas will also look to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding Daniel Sturridge’s Chelsea career by offering the forward an escape route from Stamford Bridge. Sturridge was thought to be unsettled at the way in which he is used at Chelsea even before the club’s pursuit of Porto’s Hulk, a player who would play in the same position as the former Manchester City striker. With a year remaining on his contract the time could be ripe to move for Sturridge.
