Man Utd step up pursuit of Everton’s Baines

Saturday 30 June 2012

Manchester United will step up their pursuit of Everton and England left-back Leighton Baines after Sir Alex Ferguson missed out on Spain’s Jordi Alba, who has signed for Barcelona after leaving Valencia, the Manchester Evening News has reported.

Ferguson is said to be looking for a left-back who can challenge Patrice Evra for his place in the side after the Red Devils captain endured a season of mediocre form and fell out of favour on the international scene, losing his place in the France side to Manchester City’s Gael Clichy.

Alba was sold for around £12m but Everton are expected to hold out for substantially more for Baines, with the newspaper putting the Toffees’ valuation of the defender at closer to £20m, although United are thought to be hopeful of bringing that figure down. Baines, who was a non-playing member of England’s Euro 2012 squad, has been at Everton since 2007, when he moved to Goodison Park from Wigan Athletic.
