Tuesday 03 July 2012

Chelsea are leading the chase for the latest highly-rated teenager to come out of the Southampton academy, as the Independent has reported the Champions League winners will make an offer worth up to £4m for Saints defender Luke Shaw.

Shaw, 16, has yet to make a first team start for Southampton but is regarding as the brightest prospect of his generation of players at the south coast club. A left-back, Shaw is also being watched by Arsenal but the Independent insists Chelsea are at the top of the list of the youngster’s suitors.

If Shaw does fulfil the expectations around him he will be following in the footsteps of the likes of Wayne Bridge, the former Chelsea full-back, and Gareth Bale, the Tottenham Hotspur winger who began life as a defender. Both left Southampton for substantial fees at young ages, while Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain each joined Arsenal after impressing at Southampton despite their tender ages.
